Step Inside a Legend: The Sunland Baobab

Once towering over 22 meters high with a 47-meter circumference, the Sunland Baobab was more than just a tree—it was an experience. Nestled in Limpopo, South Africa, this 1,060-year-old giant (with some studies suggesting even greater age) stood as a living monument to time, sheltering owls, blooming profusely in spring, and even witnessing history through the centuries.

Unlike any other tree on Earth, the Sunland Baobab had an enormous hollow trunk, naturally divided into two connected chambers. When its interior was cleared in 1993, evidence of Bushmen and Voortrekker visitors emerged, alongside charred remains of fires dating back to 1650 AD.

This ancient marvel became a world-famous tourist attraction when its owners transformed the cavernous interior into a pub and wine cellar. With a railway sleeper bar, seating, and even a music system, the tree bar hosted up to 60 guests at once. The second hollow housed a naturally temperature-controlled wine cellar, kept at 22°C year-round by the tree’s natural ventilation.

Though the tree suffered significant collapses in 2016 and 2017, leading to the destruction of the bar, its story is far from over. The fallen sections have been left to return to nature, a reminder of the ephemeral yet enduring power of these ancient giants. Scientists have noted a troubling trend—the loss of many of Africa’s oldest and largest baobabs over the past decade—making the Sunland Baobab’s memory all the more precious.
